A slate table comes apart into a frame, a bed in sections and a set of rails, and in the older neighbourhoods above the river every one of those pieces has to go up a staircase that was built narrow on purpose, to save floor space in a house that was already narrow. Straight, steep, walls on both sides, and a turn at the top with no room to swing anything.

The bed sections are what decide it. A three piece bed goes up in three manageable pieces at an angle the stairwell allows. A single slab does not bend and cannot be turned at the top, and in a brick house of that vintage there is usually no second route to try.

Basements here are common and often the better answer, with one catch worth measuring before anybody commits: the headroom. An older basement can have joists, ductwork and pipes low enough that a cue cannot be drawn level over the rails at one end of the room. That is a room size question rather than a moving question, and it is much cheaper answered in advance.
